Program Description:

UHON 4808 Changemaking and Social Innovation in the Appalachian Highlands, England, and Beyond
Grantham, England

Social Innovation is about developing new ideas that work to address pressing unmet needs. It refers to innovations that are both social in their ends and their means; that is, the value created by social innovation accrues primarily to society rather than to private individuals or companies. The course takes a global focus because social innovation itself is a global phenomenon and because the world’s most creative problem solvers are not concentrated in the United States. Around the world, people are encountering similar problems: inadequate education and health systems, environmental threats, declining trust in political institutions, entrenched poverty, and high crime rates, among many others.  While students will learn about leading global social innovators (such as Muhhamed Yunus, Wangari Maatthai, Fabio Rosa, and Bill Drayton), the primary focus rests on the global social innovation efforts of those less known: social innovators in Johnson City, in the Appalachian Highlands, at the University of Evansville, and in rural England, particularly students and faculty at the University of Northampton, which is a world leader in social innovation education. The three-week course includes four days of instruction prior to departure for England, nine days of instruction in England, and four days of instruction upon arrival back in Johnson City.
